In exploring Belfast I noticed that every movement in the urban environment is negotiated by a fence. Fences surround empty lots, abandoned buildings, gardens, construction sites, housing estates, public buildings; they line streets, close off roads; they delineate, hide, obscure; they provide protection, and they transmit a narrative. On a series of walks around the perimeter of the city I photographed the top every fence I saw along with the sky behind it. I was fascinated by the range of materials and variety of designs in these fences, especially when seen out of the context of the neighbourhood in which they exist.
100 of these photographs were arranged in two circle formations, echoing both the surrounding nature of fences, and the city’s perimeter where the fences were found.
